Thrush is a yeast infection caused by fungus. Similar to bacteria, yeast plays a role in keeping our body well. When the levels of yeast are healthy, they are harmless and cause no symptoms, however, when the levels rise above the normal some symptoms will include:
Vaginal tingling and discomfort
vaginal and vulval itching or burning
Abnormally thick, white discharge with a ‘cottage cheese’ appearance with or without a yeasty smell. Usually odourless
Redness and/or swelling of the vagina or vulva
Redness and/ or swelling and sometimes splits or cracks in the genital skin
stinging or burning and discomfort while urinating or during itercourse
About 75% of women will have vaginal Thrush in their lifetime, sometimes recurring and persistent. Similar to Bacterial Vaginosis, Thrush is not a sexually transmitted disease and women who do not engage in sexual intercourse can experience the symptoms. However, having intercourse can trigger and cause an infection.
There are a number of reasons why Thrush can occur, including hormonal imbalance, lifestyle, taking certain medications such as antibiotics, alcohol, sexual intercourse and more. Lady Bits helps keep Thrush in control by maintaining the numbers of yeast and fungus without harming beneficial bacteria.
